Dolls, miniature replicas of humans, are toys that are found almost universally. Most often they are  made for young children. However, as children grow older, girls exclusively become owners of dolls.  In Africa, as in other regions, dolls are created in varying shapes and garments according to region and custom. When the concept of “doll” is considered in the context of African culture, it may not be a child’s plaything at all, but rather an object used in ritual associations within the community.  African dolls are used to teach, and entertain. A doll may even be used as a charm to insure fertility in women or other such desires. They can be considered supernatural intermediaries, and can be manipulated for ritual purposes. Each doll is unique because they are handmade and many have been traditionally handed down through generations.
