In the history and culture of Nubia (Southern Egypt through present day Sudan) women played an important role. Unlike the rest of the world at the time, women in Ancient Nubia exercised significant control. In the Nubian valley, worship of the queen of all goddesses, (Aset) Isis, was the norm. From the capital of Meroe, warrior queens fought for the interests of the Nubian/Kushite Empire. Throughout history, women were portrayed in Nubian art as the bearers of the offspring of the gods. This beautiful piece is one of several bronze representations of a Nubian Princess. The particularly round face, the prominent nose, the very short rounded hair style, full lips and confident gaze indicate that this bronze is a stylized representation of a Nubian female.

Although quite similar to the original pieces that were stolen and now reside in the British Museum, this is a 20th Century piece. It was made in Benin by skilled craftsmen using the original lost wax process.
